Mercyful Fate -Formado na cidade de Copenhagen, Dinamarca, em 1980, pelo vocalista King Diamond, os guitarristas Hank Shermann e Michael Denner, o baixista Timi Hansen e o baterista Kim Ruzz,O som do grupo logo se tornou conhecido entre os fãs de heavy metal, com letras que exploravam temas sombrios e satânicos. O vocalista King Diamond adotou um visual igualmente assustador, pintando seu rosto com uma máscara macabro, inspirada no cantor Alice Cooper, quando assistiu a um concerto deste em 1975,Os vocais selvagens e estridentes de Diamond e as harmonias desenhadas pelas guitarras gêmeas de Shermann e Denner causaram um grande alvoroço no underground musical, catalisando as atenções do público e crítica locais.
